Futons and fold-away beds are often seen in small rooms and flats across the country and make excellent spare beds for visitors. The traditional futon is also great for those who like a firmer mattress or like to be low down when they sleep. We spent some time sleeping to find the best futon for you. You're welcome.
Natalia Spzoo Z Bed Futon
Quick and simple sleeping
The "Z bed" is one of my favourite versions of the futon and is excellent for that unexpected sleeper, or occasional house guest. Made from a soft microfibre and designed to fold out flat with a pillow built-in, this futon is the perfect additions to any spare room.
Humza Amani Natural Pine Futon
The original futon design
When I think of a futon this is what I see; a wooden slat frame with a puffy mattress. I spent most of my 20's sleeping on one of these and they offer a fantastic nights sleep if you are a lover of firm mattresses like me.
Inofia Folding Mattress
Easily stackable when not in use
If you are looking for a foldable bed that's a little bigger than the normal single, this folding mattress from Inofia is perfect. It folds up neatly but expands to be big enough for two — as long as you don't mind getting cosy. This is perfect for storage in a cupboard or garage until guests come over.
Honeypot Storage Sofa Bed
More sofa than futon
If you are looking for something a little more permanent then this beautiful sofa bed might be the right way to go. Not only does it fold out to become a comfortable double bed, it also has masses of storage underneath for any bedding you might need to store while it is being used as a sofa.
Rest easy with these choices
Why you can trust Real Homes
I really enjoy sleeping on a futon. Maybe it's because it is low to the ground, or that the firm mattress supports my aching back, but I always have a great nights sleep when I use one.
I really like the compact Z Bed from Natalia Spzoo as it is easy to fold away, works well as a seat, and is comfy to sleep on when needed. It is the perfect bed for someone who needs a handy spare for emergencies.
If you are looking for something more traditional — something you might use for your own bed for example — then you may want to go with the Humza Amani Natural Pine Futon. It is more robust than the Z bed and can be used daily without any issues.
