When I think of outlet covers, I think of safety covers to stop my baby from jamming things in the live holes, but that isn't all they are. While reviewing and researching this article I found there are other types of covers that can be used to make your outlet more helpful.
This list is a collection of my favorite different types of outlet covers, including safety, lighting, and even extension cord covers. The possibilities are far broader than you might think.
Safety Innovations Twin Door outlet cover
Reasons to buy
My baby loves to pull the plug on my router, and as you can imagine it's a lot of fun. This larger cover is designed for those devices that have a transformer built into the plug and take up a lot of space on their own.
The cover has a simple locking mechanism that's easy for adults, but difficult for small children, making it perfect for protecting your important plugs like routers and security systems.
Westek LumiCover
Reasons to buy
These outlet covers are perfect for retrofitting your house with USB outlets. Simply remove your old cover and slip these into place. The connectors on the inside will then power the USB plugs so no wiring is required.
These plugs even have a soft LED glow on the bottom to help you find them in the night. I'm impressed with these covers; they can modernize your house for very little money and very little time.
TayMac weatherproof cover
Reasons to buy
Outdoor living is becoming more prevalent. We love to be outside and with more people working from home than ever, being able to use your electronics outside is important. While normal outdoor sockets are weatherproof, when things are plugged in they aren't.
This cover from TayMac is specifically designed to weatherproof your outdoor sockets while in use so you can be safely outdoors in almost any weather.
Sleek Socket Ultra-Thin Electrical Outlet Cover
Reasons to buy
One of my least favorite things is having a chest of drawers or shelving unit pulled away from the wall to fit plugs behind it. This handy extension cable doubles up as a slim cover for your outlet, as well as an extension cord that allows you to find a better place for your plugs.
I use this for my bedside lamp and my Alexa so my bedside table can sit flush against the wall. It also stops my little one from getting into the spare socket. Just tuck the extension into a draw and you are good to go.
Universal Self-Closing Electrical Outlet Covers
Reasons to buy
This 8-pack of self-closing outlets is a great way to start making your home outlets safer for your children. For a small cost, you can replace the existing covers and add these spring-loaded covers that block the holes in your outlets.
All you have to do to get them to work is slide the cover to the right and plug your device in. It's simple to use but incredibly effective at keeping little hands out of electricity.
Babyproofing 50-Pack by Wappa Baby
Reasons to buy
The simplest and cheapest way to baby-proof your sockets, these removable covers come in a massive pack of 50. This allows you to cover your entire house in one go without having to worry about a huge price tag.
The only downside to these? They can be difficult to remove, but they are great for those outlets you don't use very often but that your baby is guaranteed to find.
Safety and usability
Why you can trust Real Homes
While reviewing these devices I have found some new products for my home. Actually this happens a lot while I'm working, it's why I'm poor.
My favorite cover is the Westek Lumicover. I love that you don't need any electrical know-how to get it to work, you just slip it into place and boom, two USB adapters to power your devices. The 3.1 amp chargers aren't the fastest out there, but they will easily charge your phone overnight without the need for a separate charging block.
For safety, I like the Safety Innovations Twin Door Babyproof Outlet for its ease of use and excellent coverage of even the biggest plugs. I've never been a fan of these huge bricks attached to the plug, but they are here to stay so covering them up is important.
As much as my two-year can drive me crazy, keeping her safe is of paramount importance, so my entire house is covered in outlet covers by Wappa Baby. They are easy to use and impossible for her to get back out of the outlet. Don't step on them though, they hurt more than Lego.
