I know that I’m lucky to have a dining room in my house, but it’s fair to say that it doesn’t get much use. Instead, I plonk myself on the couch and eat my tater tots and nuggets (yes, I eat like a 12-year-old child, don’t @ me) while Jim pranks Dwight on the TV in front of me. But as a large portion of my home’s footprint is largely ignored, I’ve made it my mission this year to zhuzh up my dining room. And what’s the best way to style up a dining room? A trendy rug, duh!
Finding the right rug for each room in the house isn’t easy though. It needs to be proportionate to the dimensions of the room, it needs to match your aesthetic, and it needs to mesh with the other furniture you've chosen. It's a whole ordeal, but a fun one no matter your budget.
During my own quest to find the best dining room rug, I’ve come across A BUNCH. And luckily for you, I’m feeling pretty generous, so I’ve gathered together the most delicious and delectable dining room rugs out there. From boho jute rugs to groovy plaid picks, I’ve featured them all. And yes, you’re so welcome.

If you’re an old soul looking to avoid the modern world at all costs (I don’t blame you), then you’re probably into that retro aesthetic. Whether you’ve already decked out your dining room in cantilever dining chairs or you’re committed to listening to vinyl over Spotify, then this plaid rug is for you. It’s bright without being too OTT, it’s available in a few different colors and sizes, and it’s totally groovy, baby! Plus, it’s handwoven in India using only natural-dyed wool yarn.

There’s something about heirloom rugs that makes me tingle. And that’s a good thing, y’all. There’s a real art to bringing a more traditional rug into the 21st century, and vintage rugs like this one are always on my top 10 list. The rug will provide a subtle focal point in any dining room, and the stain-resistant polyester is perfect for a dining room where stains and spills are part of the fun.
Stylish and shaggy
Made from: Polypropylene
Sizes: 4' x 6' / 5'3" X 7'6" / 8' x 10' / 9' x 12'

Shag carpets may give you serious Austin Powers vibes, but shorter shag pile carpets are my kryptonite. They’re soft, they’re cozy, and they’re not even too difficult to clean if you have the right vacuum cleaner. As if that wasn’t enough to win you over, this Moroccan-inspired rug comes in rectangle, square, and round shapes depending on the shape of your dining room table and it's perfect for all of the modern boho lovers out there. What more could you want?
Boho and easy to clean
Made from: Flannel
Sizes: 2' x 6' / 2' x 6’8” / 3' x 5' / 4' x 6' / 5' x 7'
Colors: Multi
Let’s be honest, so many companies sell rugs. But if you’re looking to upgrade your home on a budget, it’s always good to check in with good ol’ Jeff B. There are so many rugs on Amazon to choose from, but this bougie bohemian pick is my particular fave. It’s the ultimate accent rug with its color and pattern, but the real kicker for me is that it’s totally machine-washable. And on a cold wash, too!
Graphic and bold
Made from: Wool, Cotton
Sizes: 4' x 5'5" / 5' x 7'5" / 6'5" x 9'5"
Colors: Yellow, gray, white
I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of a graphic print. And while busy prints and big patterns are known for making a small room look even smaller, this La Redoute rug is simple enough to work in any size dining room. It’s bold, bright, and it’s got a little fringing for that extra somethin’ somethin’. This rug is also made of wool, which means it naturally repels dirt! It’s still a good idea to clean your rug every so often, though.
Modern marble-effect
Made from: Polyester
Sizes: 3' x 5' / 4'5" x 6'5"/ 5'5" x 7'7" / 6' x 9' / 8' x 10'
Colors: Gray, ivory
In a turn of events that makes me very happy, marble is IN for 2023. Can I get a heck yeah? Statement stone is going to be all the rage this year, but who says you have to stop at marble countertops and sinks? If you’re into a more modern look, this marble-effect rug could be the perfect new addition to your dining room. Its low pile means that it’ll also be super easy to clean.
Chic and handmade
Made from: Wool
Sizes: 7' x 7' / 3' x 5' / 4' x 6' / 8' x 10'
Colors: Multi
If you’re buying a dining room rug before you buy your dining room table, feel free to go wild with different shapes, colors, and styles. Yep, the rug world is your oyster! But while I’m certainly no stickler for the rules (certified rebel, ya know) I do think it’s always a good idea to buy a round rug if you have a round dining room table. This handmade option (with tassels!!!!!) is perfect for boho lovers out there and would make the chicest accompaniment to a wooden or rattan table.
Subtle Scandi style
Made from: Wool, cotton
Sizes: 7'10" x 5’7”
Colors: White, brown, black
You can always count on the Scandinavians to create something subtle but saucy, and this IKEA rug definitely fits that bill. This soft wool rug is really pushing the neutral trend that I can’t get enough of, but the hand-crafted weave can also add a pop of color and pattern to your dining room. Plus, it’ll feel DREAMY underfoot while you’re eating your home-cooked meal. Or your takeout. I don’t judge.
The practical option
Made from: Jute
Sizes: 5' 1" x 5' 1"
Colors: Natural
If you can’t eat a meal without getting crumbs down your bra or gravy stains on your favorite white T-shirt, then it’s probably best to think practical when it comes to your dining room rug. But practical doesn’t have to be ugly! In my eyes, jute is the perfect rug material for a precarious eater, as its hard-wearing natural fibers make it almost impossible to ruin. Plus, the natural vibe is one that goes with literally everything and anything.
What kind of rug do you put underneath a dining table?
It’s best to mimic the shape of your dining room table with the rug you choose. So, if you have a round dining room table, buy a round rug. If you have a rectangular dining room table, buy a rectangular rug. You get the gist.
The same idea can be applied when choosing the size of your dining room rug. The general rule of thumb is that your rug should be large enough to accommodate your dining room table and chairs when they are pulled out. This normally means adding an extra 30 inches from the edge of the table when measuring your rug size. If you buy one that’s too big, you might be able to get away with it. Too small and your rug will just look silly in the room!
Finally, you also need to think about how often you use your dining room, and what the rug's main purpose will be. Do you use your dining room every day? Or will the rug be purely for aesthetic purposes while you continue to eat your dinner on the couch? If the rug is going to be used every day, opt for a lower pile rug of around ½” high or less. This way, it’ll be less likely to trap crumbs and be much easier to vacuum.

Hey there! I'm Lauren, and I've been a writer now for over seven years (wow, that makes me feel old). During that time I've written about everything from celebrities to casino content, but nothing has made me "zing" quite as much as home and lifestyle pieces. I live in a beautiful Victorian terrace house in Kent with my husband and my naughty cocker spaniel puppy, and despite the leaking roof that we can't quite seem to fix, I've loved turning my house into a home. Sure, my eclectic mix of boho chic and maximalism sounds like a clashing nightmare, but it's MY clashing nightmare.
