Coronavirus has influenced what buyers seek in a new home – and a garden is key

An appealing garden is key to selling a home in the current market, say Rightmove, as buyers seek out more space

If you're looking to sell – or even rent out – your home, ensuring the garden is in order could be key to success says property sale portal, Rightmove.

In direct response to Coronavirus, we've seen a trend in buyers seeking more space. And specifically more outdoor space. So, ensuring photos of your home make it look as spacious as possible – and giving your garden a little love if necessary – may not only boost its popularity, but its potential value too.

While the property market has been one of the most affected industries since the outbreak of coronavirus, there are some early signs of recovery and some noteworthy shifts in what buyers and renters are looking for.

Prior to lockdown studio flats were amongst the most popular types of home, say Rightmove. That has changed, however, with more people looking for two bedroom houses with ample garden space – likely the result of too much time spent trapped indoors over recent months.

Rightmove have also reported an uplift in the number of people willing to live further outside of towns and cities in search of space – and perhaps in anticipation of the option to work from home more often.

So, if you're looking to sell or rent out your home, it might be worth considering what can be done to maximise your home's assets. Simple ideas include clearing clutter to ensure rooms look as large as possible, and taking the time to work on your garden if it's lacked a little love of late.

While there is some suggestion that landscaped spaces are particularly popular, we'd suggest that a garden that's neat and tidy – whatever that means for you – should do the trick if you're looking to entice potential buyers.
