You will need:
- Flagstone bricks (or something similar)
- Paver sand
- Landscape rocks
- Landscape block adhesive
- Spade
Step one: plan your first layer of stones
You can pick the size you want your fire pit to be, and choose between creating a square or circular pit. Whatever you are going for, lay your first layer of bricks and when you are happy with that, use a shovel to mark around the edge of the stone shape. Now set the stones aside and remove the turf, digging about two inches down, make sure it's as level as possible
If you are building your firepit onto a stone patio (obviously do not build it onto decking) then you can just leave the patio slab underneath, you will be layering sand and stones on top so it shouldn't get damaged.
Step two: create the bottom of your fire pit
In the hole you have just created, lay down your sand and pat it down with the back of your spade – this will create a solid flat base for your firepit. You can go in with a spirit level to ensure your base is as level as possible.
Step three: start layering your rocks
Put your first layer of rocks back around the edge of the sand circle, then before placing your next layer, add a layer of landscape adhesive. Keep repeating this for as many layers as you need – don't make your firepit too tall, remember you want to feel the heat coming off it and obviously have easy access for smores.
The last step is to cover the sand bed in small rocks or pebbles, allow everything to set and dry for a day and then build your fire in the evening!

Step four: decorate your fire pit area
Oh, and we couldn't forget the most important step! Decoration takes your firepit from a burning hole in the ground to a very Instagrammable spot to drink a beer, watch a movie and toast your mallows. String up some festoon lights, add plenty of cushions and throws to your garden furniture too to complete the look.
