Getting a good night's sleep is crucial for our health and happiness, yet 62%* of us say we don't sleep as well as we'd like. There are of course various steps we can take to increase our chances of enjoying some quality shuteye, from investing in the very best duvet to having a calm bedtime routine that doesn't involve scrolling on your phone.

Likewise, there are things we should avoid doing, including bundling ourselves up in pajamas and duvets that are too thick, according to bedding expert Jo James.

Jo is the Founder and Creative Director of premium bedding company Bedfolk, which aims to help people wind down well with ridiculously comfy bedding using the best quality materials.

Common duvet mistake stopping you sleeping well

'A mistake I often see is people thinking they need a heavy duvet and cozy sleepwear to keep warm in the night,' Jo James from Bedfolk tells us. 'But if you are someone who feels the cold, sleeping with less sleepwear or cooler sleepwear will actually allow the body temperature to warm the air between the down clusters,' she says.

This will keep you warm with just the correct tog duvet, Jo explains. It might feel counterintuitive, but opting for more summery pajamas will help you reach a comfortable temperature, in turn helping you nod off.

There's nothing worse than getting cozy and then realizing you need to go to the bathroom, but ignoring these physical things like needing the toilet or not being warm enough will prevent your mind from relaxing. Cue overthinking and counting down the hours until your alarm goes off.

It's tempting to layer up when it's cold, sleeping in jumpers and thick socks. But, as bedding expert Jo says, your body heat will actually warm up the duvet and help you to feel cozy.

James Higgins, CEO of Ethical Bedding says, that while sleepwear and duvet tog play an important role in staying warm at night, your choice in bedding fabric is also a crucial factor. 'For those who want to feel snug at night, duvet sets made from cotton and eucalyptus are the best materials of choice,' says James.
