As far as we're concerned, buying Christmas wrapping paper and wrapping presents is one of the greatest pleasures of the weeks leading up to the winter holidays. But until very recently, we had no idea that recyclable Christmas wrapping paper is a thing, or that ordinary wrapping paper isn't recyclable.
It turns out that most wrapping paper cannot be recycled either due to the dyes used to colour it or the plastic laminate coating that gives many designs a shiny finish. Oh, and anything with glitter on it can't be recycled either.
Fortunately, this doesn't mean that you have to settle for plain brown paper (although we actually don't mind a minimalist wrapping style). There are many recyclable and recycled wrapping paper designs to choose from – we've picked the absolute favourites we're buying to wrap our presents this Christmas.
If you also want tips on what to get as presents, check out our Christmas gift ideas guide.
1. The graphic printed paper with a special gift
Recycled Christmas Wrapping Paper & Plantable Seed Gift Tag Set | £3.50 + at Etsy
This amazing design elevates traditional brown wrapping paper with a gorgeous graphic Christmas cracker print and a very special gift inside the gift tag: it's actually a sachet of wildflower seeds. It's such a delightful idea and will be a nice surprise for any gardeners among your family and friends.
2. The textured paper in bold colours
John Lewis & Partners Plain Kraft Wrapping Paper, 10m | £8 at John Lewis & Partners
John Lewis are a popular destination for Christmas wrapping paper, and it's so good to see that they're going green by introducing recyclable options. The Kraft wrapping paper has a satisfying ribbed texture and gorgeous colours – the gold and green are our favourites. All the colours are fully recyclable after use.
3. The wrapping paper set with gift tags
10 Sheets of 100gsm 100% Recycled Eco Friendly Xmas Gift Wrap | £14.95 at Amazon
A medley of fun, traditional designs in pretty shades of green, made entirely from post-consumer waste and unbleached, and fully recyclable. We like that these come ready with gift tags, and there are lots of different sets to choose from.
4. The dreamiest polar bear design ever
Winter Animal Constellation Christmas Wrapping Paper | From £3 at Etsy
This has to be one of the prettiest wrapping paper designs we've ever seen: the duck egg colour, the bears, the clouds...we're getting this one for sure. It's made from 100 per cent recycled, uncoated stock, so is fully recyclable.
5. The festive Nutcracker print
Christmas Wrapping Paper Nutcracker Design | £11.99 at Amazon
What could be more festive that the Nutcracker? This design is so dainty and cute – and, it's made from recycled paper that is also recyclable. It's nice and thick, too, so easy to work with. We're getting it for all the kids in our families.
