Why you can trust Real Homes
If you like toasted bread (who doesn't?) then our Dualit NewGen Toaster review is certainly worth a read.
I've been incredibly fortunate to have tested this toaster for the past couple of weeks in our two-person household. We LOVE bread, crumpets, bagels and teacakes so we really set this appliance to work from first thing in the morning through to late afternoon. As with everything I test I look out for ease of use, maintenance and how it looks as the main requirements so you can buy with confidence if/when you opt for it for your home.

How easy is the Dualit NewGen Toaster to set up?
Very, if you read the instructions. The toaster arrives in a carboard box with carboard inserts and tissue paper (hurrah, no plastic). Upon freeing the unit from it's packaging I just untied the cable to the plug, positioned it on the kitchen countertop away from any obstacles and the toaster was almost ready to go.
Before first use the ProHeat elements will need to be conditioned. This can be done by simply turning on the toaster with all slots turned on for three minutes. There was some smoking, a slight burning smell and a 'popping sound', but this is all (I'm assured by the instructions) perfectly safe.
The toaster is now ready to use...
What's it like to use the Dualit NewGen Toaster?
It's easy to use this toaster, once you know how and when you're used to it's little quirks.
We tested the four-slot Dualit NewGen toaster with chunky slices of bread, which was handled perfectly. Each of the four slots have a generous 28mm width so the bread (and toast) didn't get stuck. This was the same when we went to toast teacakes and we found that no fruit got caught in the slots, either. There's a bagel setting if you lie bagels, too. You can opt to toast one to all four slots by using the Selector Switch, and the timer can be turned to defrost or toast to your requirements. It's these dials which took some getting used to, like anything new, BUT the instructions are very good with illustrations and descriptions to help.
A couple of things I would say, though, is that when the bread is toasted there is no 'ping' or familiar noise to say that the toast has popped up. What I'm used to listening out for is the sound of the toaster popping up, but the ejector is manual with this one so the only indicator is the timer stopping. Different, yep. But not a deal breaker (honest). There is also no cancel button so if you want to stop the toasting cycle mid-way through don't panic: turn the mechanical timer back to zero – this saved our bread a few times!
Cleaning and maintaining the Dualit NewGen Toaster
The Dualit NewGen toaster is encased in a stainless steel cover which is lovely and shinny, but it does seem to attract fingerprints and dust. After each use, it's recommended to wipe the cover with a non-abrasive cloth.
The aluminium end castings and crumb tray will ALSO need to be wiped with a damp cloth. And the internals will need to be cleaned with a soft brush, too. This is a fair bit of maintenance that is required to keep the toaster in tip-top condition, especially if you have a busy family household.
Anything else?
The Dualit NewGen toaster is available in a selection of colours which can be matched with the Dualit kettles. The toaster we had to test was in the Porcelain colour which was very subtle but complimentary because it was a neutral hue. To make it even more special, all Dualit products are hand-assembled from start to finish in the UK.
This particular model of toaster is available as a two-slot or a four-slot toaster so you can get all the Dualit styling, for a size that suits.
The verdict
Would we buy the Dualit NewGen toaster? We sure would! It's a beautiful piece of appliance tech and design which instantly upgrades the kitchen space, even if it is tired-looking like ours. What we were toasting toasted evenly and it didn't get caught in the slots, which was very satisfying. There is a fair bit of maintenance required, yes, BUT this is more of an investment piece so it would be worth looking after it the best you can.
